RENÉ GRUAU

RENÉ GRUAU

In 1936, René Gruau (1909-2004) met co-illustrator Christian Dior on the fashion desk of the French newspaper Le Figaro, where they both worked. They had similar upbringings, kindred spirits and became close friends, and when Christian Dior launched his New Look in 1947, he turned to Gruau to illustrate his haute couture designs. This is where one of the most fruitful relationships in illustration history began.

In December of 1947, Dior launched his first perfume, Miss Dior. René was asked to to produce a series of illustrations, and was given full freedom to do whatever he wanted, as they 'spoke the same language'. Their collaboration continued until Dior's death in 1957, and Gruau kept producing images for the house of Dior until the 1980s. The Dior Illustrated, René Gruau & The Line of Beauty-exhibition in Somerset House ended earlier this month, but if you missed it, check out some of his books. Get a peek view of his distinctive style and some of his most famous advertisements for Christian Dior below.

Miss Dior is a so called Chypre-scent - a sensual fragrance based on gardenia, jasmine, vetiver, patchouli and aldehydes. According to nose and perfumer Roja Dove, this is one of the top 5 greatest perfumes ever made.
